Killswitch Engage tried out other singers before returning to original frontman – then first jam with Leach blew them away
Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz says the band were under no pressure to bring original frontman Jesse Leach back into the fold after splitting with Howard Jones in January.
They tried out a number of other musicians – but after jamming with Leach they unanimously decided to rehire him.
Dutkiewicz tells Noisecreep: “We didn’t want to jump into anything too quickly. We were in a position where we could take our time and try out as many singers as we wanted. We ended up mulling it over a bit and we tried out a few different people.
“When we got back in the rehearsal room with Jesse, it just felt right. The awkwardness of meeting someone for the first time, and all of that stuff, was gone when he jammed with us again. It just took all of us getting in a room together again to remember how cool it once was. He blew us away.”
Leach and Dutkiewicz are currently at work on their side project Times of Grace. And the guitarist says his bandmate is in a much better place than where he was when he quit KSE ten years ago.
“He was feeling a lot of frustration at that point,” he explains. “He didn’t know how to take care of his voice and we had to cancel a lot of shows because of that. He was a newlywed and didn’t know how tough it would be to be in a relationship when one person is a road dog. It put him in that bad place.
“But he’s really learned how to take care of himself on the road. HIs marriage is going great. Jesse’s in a much better place now.”
Killswitch announced their reunion by replacing their website landing page with a photo of Leach and the rest of the band. It was shot in Dutkiewicz’s back garden. He says: “That photo does capture who we really are. We’re a drama-free band. We actually like hanging out with each other.”
