Steven regrets massive waste of time and money on drugs and reveals how he even had supply hidden on stage
Steven Tyler estimate’s he’s spent over $20m on drugs during his life.
And the Aerosmith frontman has revealed things were so bad he used to have a supply hidden on stage for use during shows.
The band came close to collapse two years ago when a drugged-out Tyler fell off stage in the USA, broke his shoulder and forced the Boston giants to cancel their touring plans. In the aftermath his bandmates tried to replace him.
Relationships have strengthened since then but at times have strained, especially between Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry. The singer last week admitted the pair going back on drugs killed off their attempts to make an album in 2008.
Now he tells People.com: “Left to my own devices I’d probably have been dead several times over by now.
“I snorted my Porsche, I snorted my plane, I snorted my house in a din of drugs and booze and being lost. I blew twenty million on drugs.
“I had a ‘medicine cabinet’ on stage. It was a 14-inch drum – inside there was a dixie-cup with a straw and blow in it, and a dixie-cup with Jack Daniel’s and Coke in it.”
But Tyler insists he’s been clean since he left rehab 18 months ago, and says his new job presenting US TV gameshow American Idol is all he needs to feel buzzed.
“If you think I’m not high on adrenaline when I’m going out in front of hi-def cameras and millions of people, you’re crazy. I’m stoned when the curtain drops – I just don’t snort the curtain dropping.”
The singer’s autobiography, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?, is published today.
