Former John Mellencamp drummer confirmed as replacement for Chad on the road because he’s busy with Red Hot Chili Peppers
Chad Smith has officially handed over his Chickenfoot drumsticks to former John Mellencamp skinbeater Kenny Aronoff.
Smith can’t tour with the supergroup as they go out on a brief US tour in support of second album Chickenfoot III. He’s returned to his main band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as they prepare to hit the road to promote I’m With You, their first album since taking a break.
But Smith has emphasised Aronoff is only a temporary stand-in – and he’ll be back behind the kit in a matter of months.
The drummer says: “Listen, I’m living out back. Things are rough; I’ve got bills to pay. I’ve got to go to work. I’ve got my day job to go to.
“But only for a little bit – I’ll be back. In the meantime a greta buddy of mine, Kenny Aronoff, is going to come play the drums. He’s going to tear it up. He’s awesome: you’re going to have a great time, so make sure you go out and see the Foot.
“I’m going to hand over the sticks to Kenny, but, you know what, it’s not permanent, alright?”
Aronoff adds: “Chad, I’m going to kick ass for Chickenfoot, man. I’m going to do a kick-ass job for you and the band.”
Smith replies: “Good luck!”
Chickenfoot III is released on September 26 with a live worldwide webcast scheduled for the following day.

Great to hear that Chad will be back for the Foot
