Doctors fear rising star Lorenzo may never walk again after street hold-up leaves him with bullet lodged in his spine
A 25-year-old death metal guitarist may never walk again after being shot in an armed robbery near his home.
Tony Lorenzo of Buffalo, New York band Sons of Azrael has a bullet lodged in his spine and is currenly paralysed from the waist down.
Doctors must wait for the swelling to go down before attempting to remove the missile, and until then they can’t say whether Lorenzo will make a full recovery.
The incident unfolded when an unidentified young man approached him and his friend from behind.
The guitarist tells WIVB.com: “The kid asked me, ‘Give me what you got.’ And before I could even get my wallet out, he just shot me.
“I’m not a gang-banger. I’m not someone who owes anyone money. I don’t start beefs. I’m just a normal guy, you know? I work at Pano’s Restaurant.”
Buffalo mayor Byron Brown has visited Lorenzo in hospital, where he told the victim no expense would be spared in catching the criminal.
“I can’t tell you how proud I was to hear that,” says the musician.
“I’m not going to run way from my town – but I want people on the west side to realise this stuff is happening, and to look out for each other.”
Sons of Azrael formed in 2004 and were signed to Metal Blade Records two years later. They’ve released two albums since then, with last year’s Scouting the Boneyard their most recent. The band’s website has been hacked since Lorenzo’s shooting.
