Megadeth Dave to “keep hammering” for collab – and reveals promoters wanted Heaven and Hell on original Big 4 bill
Dave Mustaine is trying to set up a supergroup with former Metallica bandmates James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich – and Hetfield may be considering the move.
Relations between the Megadeth mainman and the band who fired him in 1983 have never been better, and Mustaine says he’d love to put their musical forces together in a collaborative project.
And he’s vowed he’ll keep working on the Metallica frontman in the hope of persuading him to join in with him, Ulrich and Megadeth bassist David Ellefson.
Mustaine tells Texas radio station The Eagle Rocks: “I’ve talked to Lars and James about me and David doing a supergroup record with them.
“Well, James never said ‘no’ – it’s still kind of out there in the air. I’m going to keep hammering on him.
“That and a third Big 4 show in the USA would be the last things on my list to do.”
Mustaine says there’s now almost no chance of a fully-fledged tour starring Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. But he reveals there were teething problems when the idea of putting the Big 4 was first tabled – which led him to refuse to join in.
He explains: “There were a couple of false starts. At first I said no; I didn’t think it was going to be cool for Metallica to play in the middle of a stadium and us all to play around them.
“Then there were some other people going to be on the bill, besides the Big 4. The promoters didn’t recognise the power of the four of us, so they had things like Heaven and Hell on it.
“It was going to be Anthrax, us, Slayer, Heaven and Hell then Metallica.God bless them, and rest in peace Ronnie James Dio – but they’re not the Big 4. Pardon my French but fuck that.”
Recently bassist Ellefson said Megadeth were in a strong position due to the yin-yang nature of the pair’s relationship. Now Mustaine agrees: “One of the good things about having David here right now is, he a pastor of his church and an elder.
“He’s good at some areas where I’ll be too heavy-handed. He’ll be like, ‘Come on, the guy’s trying to work hard for you; he’s doing his best.’ And I’ll be like, ‘Oh crap – okay.’”

I’m intrigued by the possibility. It might sound great. Who knows?
I think it would be cool to see, but not at the cost of ether band breaking up. I think we ( the fans) need both of you doing your on thing. I love both bands very much and have my hole life.So remember no matter how big it gets, its all about rocking and have fun. You guys have fun with this project and i hope to see both of you in Charlotte NC,soon. Forever you fan Phil.
Screw u Dave Mustaine…sounds like a desperate late life attempt to be back in Metallica. U stay with ur own band.
Totally. DM is a tosser.
The joining would help Metallica remember what rock is supposed to sound like
And to think metallica threw Jason Newsted out because of side projects? and here we got Lars and James going for side projects with Lou Reed and now half of Megadeth?
Metallica always turn out to look like hypocritical fools. Rob is a great player but he doesn’t have the stage presence and backing vocals that Newsted brought to Metallica.
Not even Rick Rubin could bring back the real Metallica. Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction but still stank!
No effort, no desire to even play like the days of old probably because Lars forgot how to play drums and now beats on coffee cans and can’t even keep a beat.
Metallica doesn’t have it in them to create another master of Puppets it was probably written by someone else.
Get rid of these imposters claiming to be metallica and bring back the real Metallica.
agreed(for the most
This is the union one that every rocker would expect to see before dying…wish them the best and kick asses…greetings from Panama…(as written on Twitter)
Would love to see it! I definately hope both bands stay together in their current lineups and keep recording new albums, but Mustaine, Hetfield, Lars and Ellefson is one hell of a lineup and I think Mustaines harder edge, more technical guitar style and Hetfields more commercial metal sound would
create some awesome songs.

Lock all of em in a fully stocked bar for a month with a years supply of coke and let’s see what tunes come of it. Master in Peace?
hahaha.. metallica is a shittie band . . mustaine is much better than that poser. so if Ellefson and mustaine want to do a super group they need to work with real pro`s !!!
poor kid, take you fanboy hat is covering your ears. Megadeth and metallica are both great bands. Period.
That’s definitely a better idea than collaboration with Lou Reed
leave lars out of the collaboration!!! please theres 1000 drummers out there better than him right now.
