Monster band devastated as axeman and co-producer Cory Smoot, also known as Flattus Maximus, passes away on road to Canada
Cory Smoot, also known as Flattus Maximus, has died on tour with Gwar.
Bandmates discovered the guitarist’s body on their bus yesterday as they travelled from Minneapolis to the Canadian border. No cause of death has been reported.
Frontman Dave Brockie, who plays Oderus Urungus, says: “Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of Gwar are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred.”
The band have not made any decisions regarding the remainder of the tour. Brockie says: “At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today.
“A full statement will be coming. In the meantime please give your thoughts and prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.”
Smoot was the fifth person to play the role of Maximus in the band known for its alien monster costumes and comedy subtexts under high-quality metal performances. He’d been with the act for nine years and co-produced two of their recent albums.
