Stand in: Dave Grohl with Cage the Elephant

Foo Fighters mainman Dave Grohl saved the day for his support band Cage the Elephant this week after their drummer suffered a ruptured appendix.

Jared Champion was due to hit the stage with his colleagues in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday night, opening for the Foos on their current US tour.

But instead he was rushed to hospital, leaving the rest of the band with no option but to call off their show.

Grohl wasn’t having it – and offered to stand in for a portion of their set to make sure they could play. He returned to the role he’s filled in the past with Nirvana and supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and played five tracks with Cage the Elephant.

The band say on their Facebook page: “Crazy, crazy day! Huge thanks to Dave Grohl for jammin the drums. Having a great time on Foo Fighters tour. Get well soon Jared!”

Frontman Matthew Shultz told the Salt Lake City crowd: “This is one of those moments I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.”
