Rex isn’t out of the band, says Keenan… but if he wants to stay he knows what he must do
Bassist Rex Brown has been given an ultimatum by his bandmates in Down, says guitarist Pepper Keenan – and if he wants to remain in the metal supergroup he knows what he has to do.
Former Pantera man Brown joined his colleague Phil Anselmo in the outfit a decade ago. He’s been replaced by Crowbar’s Pat Bruders on their current US tour. Corrosion of Conformity axeman Keenan says he’s not sure how the situation will play out.
The guitarist tells the Daily Times: “I don’t know what to say. Rex is not out of the band, but he’s not playing with us either.
“He’s got things he needs to deal with. We gave him an ultimatum and he’s trying to work things out.”
Regardless of what happens, Down are planning a return to the studio which could result in a series of four related releases.
Keenan says: “We’re going to try and do four EPs, connected with artwork. We’ll have a frontload heavy-as-fuck EP, then some of the acoustic stuff we’ve been saving for a while. Then a completely different style, and the fourth one would be another doom-laden heavy one.
“We’re kinda going backwards – the first record came out a long time ago, so we’re feeling that vibe and heading that way. It will be stripped down and to the point.”
The guitarist is also plotting a return to CoC, who are currently touring without him as a three-piece. Meanwhile, Brown has formed Kill Devil Hill with former Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell drummer Vinny Appice.
