Iron Sloth guitarist in custody after calling cops, asking for a ride, admitting he has a weapon and predicting world’s end
Justin Godfrey, guitarist and mainman with doom metal band The Abominable Iron Sloth, was arrested after calling cops to say he was the “Angel of Death,” had an assault weapon and had been eating mushrooms.
The 28-year-old told officers from Oroville Police Department, Butte County, California, that he “needed a ride to a lot of places,” and discussed his belief the world was about to end.
Officers carefully approached him on his porch at 7.30am on October 27, but when they asked him to put down his weapon he did. They searched his home and discovered a second weapon which had been modified, which is an offence in California.
Godfrey was charged with two felonies related to the guns and jailed, with bail set at $30,000.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Collins tells the Chico Enterprise Record: “Our concern was if there was a weapon and we were talking to someone calling himself the ‘Angel of Death,’ we were going to be cautious.
“His conversations with us centred on the end of the world and what things are going to transpire.
“We always hope for a peaceful resolution, and because he was cooperative and compliant, this did end that way.”
No information was available regarding the mushrooms Godfrey said he’d eaten, although officers say he was “coherent” during the entire episode.
