Happy Father’s Day: Nick and wife Nikki share tears of joy after helping bring second girl Maxine into the world
311′s Nick Hexum was forced to play midwife after his wife Nikki went into labour unexpectedly recently.
And the alt-rock frontman helped bring his second daughter Maxine Vita into the world at their family home last month – despite a brief panic when the baby became trapped in the birth canal.
The couple had arranged an assisted home birth but the midwife was not present when Nikki suddenly realised Maxine was on her way.
Hexum relied on the experience of having attended the arrival of elder daughter Echo 21 months earlier.
Hexum, 41, tells People: “After Max’s head popped out the delivery stalled for the next couple of contractions. The baby’s head was blue and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.
“I knew from first time around that sometimes the baby’s shoulder would get caught and they’d have to reach in there to free her. I felt her shoulders and rotated them back and forth – and with the next contraction she slid out smoothly.”
Maxine wasn’t moving, but Hexum says: “I jiggled her around until I heard a ‘Waah!’ It was an amazing moment.”
The midwife arrived soon afterwards and cut the cord, and the proud parents didn’t need to attend hospital. “Everything was fine,” says the singer. “We just sat in bed laughing and crying tears of joy about what a crazy experience it was.”
